RTS Meters: Time To Change Yours

By June 30, 2025, the longstanding Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) will bid farewell, and if you have one, you NEED to have it exchanged with a new meter. If you still have an RTS meter when the shutdown occurs it's likely you will be left without heating and hot water. You can book your exchange here.

For over four decades, the Radio Teleswitch Service has meant consumers benefited from cheaper off-peak tariffs by charging essential systems overnight. Originating in the 1980s, the RTS infrastructure has served reliably but is now nearing the end of its operational life. Around 800,000 customers across the UK, including 5,000 So Energy customers, will be affected as RTS meters come to the end of their life. It’s important to check if you’re one of them, so you can stay on top of any changes and keep your energy service running smoothly.

The Transition
Radio Teleswitch Service, a precursor to smart meters, signalled load switching management like Economy 7 setups. As its relevance wanes, it's slated for shutdown by June 2025. To ensure a smooth transition, impacted customers will receive a free smart meter upgrade, streamlining system control without interruptions. We must stress that having your meter exchanged is non-negotiable, and in the event you fail to let us exchange the meter and are negatively affected by the RTS shutdown, we will accept no responsibility. We're doing everything we can to ensure everyone who has an RTS meter get theirs exchanged as soon as possible.
