The Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme is a UK government initiative set up to encourage people to generate their own electricity at home. Customers are paid for the energy generated if they installed a low-carbon, renewable electricity generator in their home.
The scheme started in 2010 and closed to new applications in 2019. This means you can no longer apply to join the Feed in Tariff scheme but if you are a current FIT generator you can still get payments. If you had your system installed after March 2019, please see Smart Export Guarantee.
Switching your Feed-in Tariff (FIT)
Can I move my Feed-in Tariff to So Energy?
So Energy is a Mandatory Feed-in-Tariff Licensee. You can switch your Feed-in Tariff payments to So Energy by filling out this form. It can take around 28 days for your switch to be complete once all your documentation has been received.
Why do I need to provide accompanying documentation with my application?
A Feed-in Tariff installation is a financial asset. This means that proof of ownership needs to be established. You'll need to provide the following:
- ID (copy only)
- Photo of the generation meter reading with the meter serial number visible
- Proof of address (If you are not currently a So Energy customer).
Feed-in Tariff (FIT) Payments
- How will I be paid for my Feed-in Tariff?
Upon switching to So Energy, we will request your bank details to set up a Direct Debit for the account you require payments to be made to. These payments will be issued quarterly*. A statement will be issued prior to the payment being made; these will be issued after the meter reading window closes.
It can take around 8 weeks to issue your statement and payment, after the close of the meter reading window
*Payments are dependent on the submission of meter readings.
- How often do I need to submit my meter readings for the Feed-in Tariff?
You can submit your meter reads whenever is convenient. However, we suggest, to keep your quarterly bills accurate and up to date, that you submit your meter reads during the periods below:
March 1st – March 20th
June 1st – June 20th
September 1st – September 20th
December 1st – December 20th
- How do I submit my meter readings for my Feed-in Tariff?
Please send your meter readings, along with a photograph of your read/s to FIT@so.energy, ideally from the email you provided during your switch request with your account number/FIT ID in the subject line.
- What happens if I don’t submit my generation meter reading for my Feed-in Tariff?
If you do not submit a meter reading within the meter reading window, we cannot issue a generation payment based on estimated readings. As a result, it will be included in your next payment, as long as we receive a meter reading for that quarterly bill period.

Your Feed-in Tariff (FIT) Installation
- What do I need to do if I made changes to my installation?
Please get in touch with us through FIT@so.energy and we will be happy to help. Please be aware that changes to capacity or installation in general can invalidate any future FIT payments. We recommend that you read through our Terms and Conditions here
- I have a storage battery, how do I let you know?
Please send a schematic diagram to FIT@so.energy with your account number or FIT ID as the subject.
- What do I do if my generation equipment stops working?
Any issues with your generation equipment or generation set up is the responsibility of the generator. You must contact the installer or another accredited installer to resolve the problem. The cost of repairs are the responsibility of the FIT generator.
- Why do you have to read my meter?
Your FIT meter(s) are read so we can verify the readings that you’ve previously provided to us. We’re obligated to read your meter(s) in person at least once every 2 year, as a FIT licensee, and if we cannot access your meters it may result in a payment being paused until a reading is obtained.
- I’ve had my generation meter replaced due to a fault.
We will need the following information to update the details currently held:
- Date of exchange
- Meter serial number of removed meter
- Final meter read from the old meter
- New meter make and model
- New meter serial number
- Start read of the new meter
- The reason for the change.
